Independence Day
July 4th, 2008
  • The Windmill Gears Arrive in Yorktown...
  • I'm delighted to announce that on July 4th, 2008 - Independence Day - the gear system for the Yorktown Windmill were on display in the historic village. Although our friends at Jo-Kell, Inc. had offered to donate a motor for the project, last minute refinements to the gear system prevented us from taking advantage of their generous offer. Instead, we had a team of Boy Scouts and other volunteers standing by throughout the day to demonstrate the gear assembly for visitors (See the animination below).

During the course of the Independence Day celebration, our team met with hundreds of citizens who were ready to volunteer and contribute when the next stage of the project begins...

For a community project --- that is the very highest praise...

The Yorktown WIndmill Project Team is still working with York County government and civic leaders to find the best fit for this project in our community. More news will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

During the course of the parade, the Yorktown Windmill conceptual model joined the festivities and took a ride down Main Street as part of the Children of the American Revolution's float. Although a few rough spots along the path left it a little worse for wear, the model helped the CAR win 3rd Place overall in the judging.

  • Dedicated Delegates for the Declaration
  • In addition to manning the display for the Windmill Gears, many of the Yorktown Windmill Project Team members stepped up to represent the 13 original states for the reading of the Declaration of Independence. Only days before the event, members of the Windmill Team came together to design and build a bell stand to be used for the ceremonial bell ringing.
